We have interesting and informational lectures and classes all four days of the event and Keynote Speakers each evening. Observing right from your campsite. There are showers and toilets down by the observing field and additional showers and toilets in the bunkhouse. Click the words "keynote speakers" to see a list of all of last year's speakers. New Mexico Museum of Space History’s Astronomy League Star Party — Fall is a fantastic time to enjoy the night sky. Come along as a museum staff member shares the captivating stories of Pegasus, Perseus, Andromeda, and Cassiopeia. Discover the fascinating backstory of Pegasus, often depicted as a horse in various cultures. Meanwhile, the NMMSH Astronomy League will be using telescopes to observe celestial objects like Saturn, the moon, and the Andromeda Galaxy. The event kicks off at 7:30 PM at the New Mexico Museum of Space History’s outdoor observatory.
Activities during Star Gaze will include a telescope meet and greet, solar observing, a guided sky tour, night sky observing, and other demonstrations.
Feel free to walk around and enjoy the views of objects through a variety of telescopes on the field. Please ask the owner before using a telescope. If you have young children, please watch them around expensive astronomical equipment. Remember, telescope mirrors are sensitive to cigarette smoke and bug spray. Pets should also not be brought onto the observing field.
The 1st "Okie-Tex was held on Oct 20-22, 1984, at "Elephant Camp", on the NW side of Lake Murray. We had about 75 attendees, with a swap meet, a vendor and, of course, a really severe thunderstorm, the 1st night. I did mention this was a star party, didn't I? The consensus of the group was that a Fall star party in this area was a really good thing, and the OKCAC would continue to have an "Okie-Tex Star Party" in the Fall time frame, as a complement to the "Texas Star Party", and most importantly, another good reason to get together with friends and enjoy their hobby.
Star Parties are designed to give you, the amateur astronomer a place to setup your equipment and share the experience of observing with fellow astronomers. SJAC does not setup telescopes for the general public.
REGISTRATION FEES: Pre-registration is $20.00 via Paypal or by mail.
Registration at the door is $20 per person upon arrival at the event. Kids 16 and under are free!
Whether you’re embarking on your astronomy journey or are already an avid and experienced observer, this event offers something special. Leave behind any worries about feeling overwhelmed – our engaging activities and workshops are for everyone to enjoy a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.
