Mars Probes

More probes have visited Mars than any other planet.

  Vikings 1 and 2
These were the first space probes to land on the surface of Mars

  Pathfinder
On July 4, 1997, after a 7 month journey, entered the Martian atmosphere

  Mars Orbiter
The Mars Orbiter

  Spirit and Opportunity
These are to date the two most successful probes that have visited Mars.

Phoenix
Launched in August 2007 and will arrive at Mars on 25 May, landing at the southern edge of the planet's ice-rich northern polar cap. It will dig up samples of the ice and soil there, looking for complex organic molecules and investigating whether conditions there might once have been favorable to life.
